His Excellency Mr. Francisco García Mota
The Holy Priest
He was born in Cortes de la Frontera in 1930. He was appointed priest in 1954, celebrating his first mass in Gaucín. He had an enviable ecclesiastical career.
He was Dean of the Malaga Cathedral for 17 years, promoting numerous improvements to enhance the most important temple in the city.
He managed to make the lighting that the temple currently has possible, mediating with the Fundación Sevillana de Electricidad.
He was one of the first prelates to be concerned about the state of the roofs of our cathedral, always being an advocate of finishing the work on the cathedral. He changed the public address system, the bells were cleaned, the organs were repaired. He converted the inner courtyard of the Sagrario Church into an open-air museum space with the collaboration of the artist Jorge Rando.
He was a full member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Telmo. He wrote numerous books, many of them inspired by the Cathedral of Malaga.
He always sought the support of numerous companies and local institutions during the almost twenty years he was in charge of the Cathedral.
He used to attend morning gatherings held at the Cafeteria El Jardín, next to the cathedral, which he held daily with illustrious people from our city, such as Mr. José Hernández Rodriguez, chief commissioner of the National Police Force, Cayetano Utrera Ravassa, former mayor of Malaga, notary and property registrar, among others.
He has received numerous awards, such as being named favourite son of Cortes de la Frontera, adopted son of Gaucín, and even a street in the historic centre of Málaga has been named after him since 2011. The mayor, Francisco de la Torre, was in charge of unveiling the plaque for this street at an event attended by García Mota himself and the bishop.
This Holy Priest passed away on 15 July 2024 at the age of 94.
